What’s the best thing about the Kentucky Derby? Ok, other than the mint juleps and a win, place or show ticket on the first in the race for the triple crown.
The hats! According to the Kentucky Derby, the hat parade is part Southern tradition, part spectacle and much of what makes “The Greatest Two Minutes in Sports” one of the greatest people-watching events in the world. From the fantastic to the sublime, there are no rules or limits when it comes to choosing a Derby hat.
In that tradition, Methodist Family Health is hosting a hat contest as part of its signature fundraiser, Southern Silks. Any DIY milliner can enter – children or adults – and the rules are: make your own hat or fascinator from items around the house or supplies you get at the craft or dollar store. Take a photo of that hat and e-mail it to Foundation@MethodistFamily.org by 4:30 p.m. on August 31. On September 1, Inviting Arkansas Owner/Publisher/DIY Hat Designer Michele Towne will select the winner, who will be announced during the virtual event, which starts at 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 5. The prize for the best hat is a beanbag toss (cornhole) game from Stein Mart Little Rock.
So dust off the craft supplies, hit up the dollar store and get your Derby hat design on!
Race to 7th annual virtual Southern Silks and celebrate the 146th running of the Kentucky Derby at a virtual post-race soiree where you can enjoy faux horse races where winners are awarded prizes. You also can bid on some of the best auction items around like a trip to Costa Rica, a James Hayes chandelier, a Alwand Vahan bracelet and much, much more. Anyone with Wi-Fi can attend Southern Silks by watching Methodist Family Health’s Facebook page and YouTube channel at 6 p.m., Saturday, September 5. You also can bid on the auction items from your laptop, tablet or smartphone. Proceeds supports Methodist Family Health’s mission to provide the best possible care to those who may need help.
