Blog Series: Dancing with Our Stars – Meet Susan Hickingbotham

Each year, community leaders put on their dancing shoes in hopes of winning the title that is earned at the Dancing with Our Stars Gala. All this fun and friendly competition among participants benefits the Children’s Tumor Foundation and supports the Arkansas chapter’s research and mission: to end and find a cure for neurofibromatosis, a genetic disorder that disturbs cell growth in the nervous system, causing tumors to form on nerve tissue.

CTF also provides support for children and families affected by NF. A portion of the proceeds is donated for grants to send Arkansas teens to the International NF Summer Camp held at Camp Kostopulos (Camp K).

Leading up to the grand event, we’re putting each star in the spotlight and introducing them on our blog. They will compete for the dancing title and mirror ball trophy at the Sept. 8 gala, in addition to soliciting contributions + votes prior to the event.

Philanthropy is significant to the lives of both Susan and her husband of 21 years, Herren. She has served on numerous committees and nonprofits along with volunteering for many local causes. They both have enjoyed co-chairing several events and galas, and are passionate about giving back to the community and making a difference in the lives of others.

Originally from Houston, Susan attended the University of Arkansas. Early in her career as a financial advisor, she gained great respect and appreciation for those who dedicate their lives to professions in health care and nonprofit organizations.

Susan loves new challenges, and is excited and honored to slip on some dancing shoes and be a part of this event to raise awareness and money for the Children’s Tumor Foundation.

Inviting Arkansas: What do you love about Central Arkansas?
Susan: We have such a beautiful state, but the people are what make living here so special! It is an honor and a privilege to give back to this wonderful community.

IA: A dance you’ve always wanted to learn?
Susan: Hip hop! I love the energy and creativity. Being the oldest dancer this year, that would be very ambitious on my part!

IA: Why did you agree to be a Dancing with Our Stars contestant?
Susan: To support the children and adults affected by NF. These heroes bring such an inspiration to others, and Dancing with Our Stars is certainly helping with the awareness of this genetic disorder. I’m very excited to participate and help.

IA: What are you most looking forward to about the evening?
Susan: I look forward to being in a room with so many friends – including fellow contestants – while having fun supporting such an important cause.

IA: What are you nervous about?
Susan: Somehow ending up on my fanny!
