Walk, Paws, Turn, Repeat

"My pets make my life happy and complete and I think many people feel the same way," says Meredith Catlett, member of the CARE Board of Directors. "Pets give us unconditional love, and where else in the world can we get that? CARE helps give animals loving homes and give owners great joy." This passion for animals is what keeps Meredith involved in the organization, as well as coming back each year to strut down the catwalk at the annual Paws on the Runway fundraiser.

Central Arkansas Rescue Effort for Animals, or CARE, couldn't agree more. Established in 1998, CARE rescues abandoned dogs and cats from euthanasia and prepares them for adoption into new homes. In addition to their adoption efforts, CARE provides programs to help low income families sterilize their pets and increases awareness for the need to spay and neuter all pets. Since its inception, CARE has grown from four volunteers to hundreds of animal lovers willing to offer their time to save our furry friends.

However, CARE can't do it all on their own. According to Becky McCauley, co-chair of this year's Paws on the Runway, the nonprofit relies completely on the generosity of their donors and foster "parents". The fourth annual event includes beer, wine and hors d'oeuvres in the glamorous setting of the Governor's Mansion. "The coup de grace is a fabulous doggie (and one kitty!) fashion show, featuring fashions available at the CARE gift shop," Becky says. "Local celebrities and dignitaries escort either their own pet or one of several animals that are available for adoption. We will also be debuting our 2011 CARE calendar, featuring pets rescued and adopted through CARE and pets whose photos were submitted by their proud owners."

Whether you love animals or fashion, the event has something for you. Mary Parker, longtime CARE volunteer, says this year's silent auction will include a number of fabulous items. "We have some wonderful donated items this year including tickets to the Symphony, Waterford crystal, and jewelry from some of the top jewelers in Little Rock, and trips from American Airlines. This year's proceeds will go to support the purchase of the mobile spay/neuter clinic, continued spay/neuter clinics and increased animal rescue."

This year's Paws on the Runway takes place Friday, November 5 with the silent auction beginning at 5:30. But tickets are selling out fast! To reserve your $75 ticket for limited reserved runway seating, or $50 ticket for general admission, call (501) 603-CARE (2273) for reservations by credit card. Or you can mail a check to PO Box 7604, Little Rock, AR 72217, or email care@careforanimals.org. Please include the name, address, phone number and email address (if available) of each guest who will be attending.

"This is such a fun, heartwarming event, because the animals are so adorable and unpredictable. Animal lover or not, you will be charmed," Becky says.
