American Dreams: Dandelion Home & Garden

In the midst of the global pandemic, Susan Veasey and Rachel Morris opened Dandelion Home & Garden with a vision to create a community of customers who become friends and share a love for the good life. Susan elaborates, “Our customers always say Dandelion is a happy and safe place to buy gifts or just hang out for a while.”

The shop is situated in the heart of Hillcrest, where LOCAL is a mantra, and offers a variety of specialty plants. Most notable are the air succulents. Rachel, the green thumb of this dynamic duo – elaborates, “Plants can be a little intimidating for beginners. Our air succulents are perfect for building confidence. They are no maintenance – just let them sit and tell them they are pretty.” In addition to the greenery, Susan and Rachel have curated a collection of vintage treasures that can be utilized as containers. Blending the antiques with a bit of whimsy makes Susan smile. “We included home furnishings to our mix because we want this space to feel cozy and inviting,” she adds. “We want this to feel like home – a place where friends can gather and visit.”

The couple takes pride in a shop that celebrates diversity and inclusion – guaranteeing that there is something special for any and every budget. “We have charming potted plants for smaller thoughtful gifts,” Rachel notes. “And we offer custom arrangements; we can provide the vintage container or a customer can bring us something fabulous from home. We’ll fill it with a lovely, no maintenance succulent.”

It’s Southern hospitality at its’ best – stepping into Dandelion Home & Garden feels like a friend’s home. “We want to really be a part of the community and the neighborhood,” Susan reflects. First Thursdays in Hillcrest are the perfect opportunity to invite newcomers into their space, showcasing an eclectic assortment of treasures. “We hand pick our plants and source all of our antiques ourselves,” Rachel explains. “We also feature more than 30 local artists – each piece is chosen with love to share with our community.” Every item is unique and these ladies have details and stories to share. Susan jokes, “We think of every sale as a never-ending story.” At this shop, it’s a tale of gratitude and generosity.  In times of great uncertainty, a little green goes a long way. “Plants bring joy – we like to think we’re in the happiness business.”
