“Helping customers live active, fulfilling lives”
Ted Herget lives the lifestyle that defines his business. He’s participated in marathons, the LeadMan series, IronMan Triathlons and bike races. No stranger to competition, it’s no surprise that his family-owned-and-operated business continues to expand with a mission to outfit friends and customers for fashion + function. Gearhead Outfitters, established by Ted and a spirit for adventure, features the most recognizable brands in outdoor lifestyle clothing and footwear – The North Face, Patagonia and Merrell.
It all started in a friend’s living room in Jonesboro when Ted realized an opportunity to provision outdoor enthusiasts with the best products available. His desire to respond to that community need, paired with his passion for helping others, was the perfect combination to open the first Gearhead Outfitters in 1997. “We aim to make everyone feel like a friend,” explains Ted, “and offer truly authentic service.” This 700-square-foot store flourished for five years before moving into a downtown Jonesboro location. As an anchor for the revitalization of downtown Jonesboro, the store brought new life to the historic Main Street location. Today, Gearhead Outfitters is a regional brand with locations in four states.
Ted’s wife, Amanda, brings an important feminine perspective to Gearhead’s women athletic apparel. The couple embraces the shop local philosophy. “We invest in the communities; it’s part of our mission and core values,” Amanda says. “We employ local residents and contribute thousands of dollars to local charities each year.” Through philanthropy and fun, Gearhead Gives provides support to nonprofits throughout their communities.
Ted admits he didn’t hire an employee until after being open for a few years. A business tip he learned, “Hire people who share in the vision and help make it a reality.” This vision and business philosophy creates a community, not just another shopping experience. At Gearhead Outfitters, the staff shares in their customer’s journey – thrills, spills and life in the wild outdoors. Ted says, “We not only want to introduce our guests to products they will love but also teach customers how to use them. Helping outfit someone for the trip of a lifetime and hearing about their adventures in return – that’s inspiration.”
