Katie Frieden shares insight + perspective to her role…
What was your path to becoming a professional actor?
Since the age of 4, I have been performing. I grew up dancing at my hometown dance and performing arts studio, Metropolitan School of the Arts, located in Alexandria, VA. Subsequently, I attended Oklahoma City University to continue my training in Dance Performance. Along the way, I became very interested in Musical Theatre and took vocal and acting lessons. After college, I performed in regional productions at the Woodstock Playhouse and Surflight Theatre, and I most recently performed in the immersive production of Netflix’s A Bridgerton Experience. Through every experience, I am continuing to learn how to create my path in this industry. Becoming a professional actor would have never been possible without my incredibly supportive parents and teachers.
What’s your favorite part about touring the country with CHICAGO?
There are so many wonderful things about touring the country with CHICAGO. I love exploring different cities, performing in gorgeous theaters across the country, and traveling with my wonderful cast, orchestra, and crew. However, my favorite part is getting to bring this show to audiences who may not have the opportunity to see the Broadway show of CHICAGO. It is so special when I meet someone at the stage door that tells me “this is the first musical I have ever seen and I loved it” or “I have only seen the movie and loved getting to see the stage production.” Bringing this story and joy to people every night is absolutely my favorite part of touring with CHICAGO.
What do you enjoy most about performing in this show every night?
I love that the show is different every night. Based on the audience’s energy, my scene partner’s energy, the different theaters we’re in; there are so many factors that allow no two performances to be the same.
What has the audience reaction been to CHICAGO?
Audiences have loved CHICAGO. Different cities, different theaters, and different audiences all react a little differently. Some laugh more, some clap louder, some hoot and holler more, and some are more introspective. To quote my character, we have loved the audiences, and they love us for loving them, and we all just love each other.
What is your favorite number in the show?
My favorite number is always changing because there are so many parts of this show that I love. That being said, I always love to perform the ending Nowadays and Hot Honey Rag with my incredible Velma Kelly, Logan Floyd.
What item can’t you live without while on tour?
I am an over-packer so packing cubes are a must for me on tour that limit me and keep me organized. Additionally, it is important for me to have things that bring me comfort while I’m away from home like my comfy blanket, scented candle, kindle and journal.
