Dining Review – Walter’s Green Room

By Brad Hudgens

Quaint Fine Dining in the Heights

Walter’s Green Room is located at Heights Corner Market and this combination really works! I’ve known many grocery/restaurant combos, but usually the dining is very casual and secondary.  Eric and Lou Anne Herget have built a winning duo that has sophistication and class, yet is totally comfortable. The market and restaurant are both highlights! The dining room has a warm intimacy that includes regular tables, but also cozy living room-like seating. This is perfect to meet friends for cocktails before dinner, with a bar that is small but gorgeous. The attached Heights Corner Market offers many gourmet products including pre-prepped meals. For small private events, tables can be set and lights dimmed in the market for a unique venue that is very special.

I would start with Walter’s Buffalo Fried Oysters with Remoulade and Pickled Onions. This has a little zip and is ultra-tasty. The Beef Tenderloin Satay with Thai Peanut Sauce is also excellent! I really like the Crispy Brussel Sprouts glazed with Chili infused Honey and Toasted Pumpkin Seeds. Chef Cass (Cassidy) changes the menu almost daily depending on fresh product availability.

Tremendous entrées include a delicious Sesame Seared Ahi Tuna with Chili Aioli and Sweet Soy Glaze. This is served with Sticky Rice and Veggies. A recent special was a delightful Blackened Grouper with Semolina Fried Bay Scallops and Tarragon Beurre Blanc. Yum! There is also a great Beef Tenderloin Filet with green peppercorn-cognac cream sauce.

The Heights Corner Market’s butcher is Nathan, and he’s been at this same location for over 20 years. His butcher-case offerings are plentiful and beautiful. Thomas is the Market chef, making tasty pre-made take-home modern comfort food. His Butternut Squash soup and Mushroom Sage soup are his pride-and-joys. Other items are homemade meatloaf, chicken spaghetti, beef pot roast, stuffed peppers, twice baked potatoes and much more! Specials change daily. The market shelves and chilled areas are teeming with gourmet delicacies such as Janis & Melanie products, Mason Dixie scratch made Cheddar Chive Biscuits and hundreds of other hard-to-find specialty foods. Lou Anne is the purveyor, and it’s obvious that she takes this seriously and with a flair!

Sunday Brunch is popular with the build-your-own omelets, eggs benedict, breakfast burrito or avocado toast. There is also a fantastic French toast available which is perfected with banana, apple, cinnamon bread and apple syrup.

The wine list is solid and a full bar is available. You will have a great time at this neighborhood treasure! Eric and Lou Anne and working hard to make sure your experience is superb at Walter’s Green Room. Located on Kavanaugh, one block north of Cantrell, I’ll see you there!
