Women in STEAM – Cassandra Smythe

Cassandra Smythe | CTEH | Disaster Recovery Specialist

Beginning Interests… CTEH offered the opportunity to be in the field during emergency responses, travel to new places and help on a diverse range of projects, from natural disasters to HAZMAT-related incidents.

A Day at Work… 2020 was an unprecedented year for nearly every industry. But CTEH had a front row seat to the health and safety challenges our nation faced as we provided expert, COVID-19-related consulting and response services. Recently, I’ve been busy on film and television production shoots, where I’ve helped manage COVID-19 testing and compliance in an effort to reduce potential exposure risks.

Career Evolution… I graduated with a degree in business and entrepreneurship but was drawn to the unique and wide-ranging professional opportunities at CTEH. I initially served on our firm’s emergency response team. Today, I’m a consultant in our disaster recovery division where I combine my education, consulting skills and on-the-ground experience to help with projects.

LOVE the Work… Every project and every day are different. We constantly face new and unique health and safety issues. I’m fortunate to work with amazing people who make tackling these challenges, and the long hours of work they require, easier. We can be away from home for extended periods of time and it’s helpful have a great team on your side.

Surprising, but True… Before CTEH, I had no idea about the number of STEAM-related opportunities available.  Women have been, and still are, breaking into these traditionally male-dominated industries. In 2020, I had the chance to work with several women-led companies and organizations; it’s been both eye-opening and inspiring.

Advice… Don’t let antiquated ideas about the STEAM field deter you. Reach out to women who are doing this work to learn about their experiences and new or untapped opportunities. And never be afraid to speak your mind, ask questions or follow your passion.

These wonder women are redefining what “full STEAM ahead” means in Arkansas. With exciting careers in science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics – each reflects WIT (Women in Tech) and true grit for making the most of every opportunity. Here’s to the powHER of knowledge.
