Women in STEAM – Hallie Shoffner

Hallie Shoffner SFR Seed CEO

Day at Work..Every day is different, which suits me. One morning, I may be in the soybean or rice fields. The next day, I’m tackling office tasks before finishing out in our warehouse. Sometimes, I find myself battling more paperwork than I’d like, but I always know my side-by-side is waiting for me.

Beginning Interests…I grew up farming. I spent every summer until college working alongside my mom, a plant physiologist and field researcher. She’s a powerhouse and my role model. I’ve always wanted to be like her.

Career Evolution…I’ve been in the government, non-profit, and for-profit sectors. I quickly learned I didn’t like being stuck behind a desk, and I wanted to be my own boss. My mom saw I wasn’t happy and asked if wanted to come back to the farm. I spent three years learning from her steady guidance, and I never looked back.

Love the Work…As a farmer, you literally see the fruits of your labor. I love riding around our fields, particularly early in the morning before the crew comes in and powers up the equipment – watching, listening, learning, and responding.

Surprising But True…You must be willing and able to adapt and pivot quickly. The things you want or even expect to happen may turn out differently, and that’s okay.

Advice…You can handle anything your career or life throws your way by being flexible, planning for change, and, above all, working honestly and diligently.
