AAPI: Naveen Kumar Cricket Tournament for Suicide Prevention
September 16 @ 8:00 am
WHAT: AAPI Arkansas’s Second Annual Naveen Kumar Cricket Tournament
WHEN: Saturday, September 16 at 8 a.m.
WHERE: Cricket Grounds at Stone Links Park, 110 AR-391, North Little Rock, Ark. 72117
A statewide nonprofit is hosting the Naveen Kumar Cricket Tournament for the second year to raise awareness and support for individuals suffering from mental health issues. Along with the friendly sports competition, the American Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (AAPI) Arkansas will have mental health professionals available to field questions and offer resources to those needing assistance.
“Despite the prevalence of mental health issues like depression and anxiety, these conditions can often go untreated, putting Arkansans at risk of suicide,” said Srini Gokarakonda, M.D., MPH, president of AAPI Arkansas. “This weekend’s tournament, organized in honor of our late friend and colleague, is part of our continued efforts to uplift those who may be struggling.”
According to the Arkansas Department of Health, suicide is the state’s leading cause of violent death. Certain demographic groups, including men, adolescents, and individuals 65 and older, are at higher risk of suicidal ideation. To support individuals in need, AAPI Arkansas regularly hosts community outreach events, including running training on Saturdays, yoga and mindful activities on Sundays and frequent, informal member gatherings.
