CELEBRATE! MAYA PROJECT/CORETTA SCOTT KING CENTER: Sisterhood & Social Justice

We’re “Celebrating Maya @95” throughout April 2023

LITTLE ROCK—Since 2015, Celebrate! Maya Project has celebrated the life and legacy of iconic poet and writer Dr. Maya Angelou. This year marks her 95th Birthday, and we are celebrating her life throughout the month of April! “We are celebrating all that Dr. Angelou has contributed to the world, to America and to Arkansas, her childhood home,” Celebrate! Maya Project president Janis F. Kearney, said.

The month-long celebration includes:

April 6, 2023 | 6 p.m.  Debut film screening of “A Journey Back to Now.” It is based on a Cambodian youth project, produced by the Global Arts Corps. Celebrate! Maya Project is proud to partner with GAC in premiering this film at CALS Ron Robinson Theater, Library Square, 100 River Market Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72201.

April 7, 2023 | 6 p.m.  Celebrate! Maya Project and University of Arkansas – Pulaski Technical College presents a benefit concert featuring the Rodney Block Collective, with an opening birthday homage to Dr. Angelou by Arkansas poet and artist CC Mercer, at the UA-PTC Center for Humanities and Arts Theater, 3000 West Scenic Drive, North Little Rock, AR 72118.

April 12, 2023 | 6 p.m.  Celebrate! Maya Project and the Coretta Scott King Center presents the third annual Sisterhood & Social Justice, a virtual gathering with Music, Poetry, and inspiration.

April 18, 2023 | 11:30 a.m.  Celebrating Maya@95 Birthday Luncheon and Celebration, featuring 2023 Spirit of Maya award recipient Barbara Higgins Bond. Music by Kami Renee, and poetry by youth members of the Writeous Poets, Heifer International Headquarters, 1 World Avenue, Little Rock, AR 72202.

April 29, 2023 | 10 a.m.  Our first annual Celebrating Maya Community Festival for youth and adults, in collaboration with Central High School Historic District’s Neighborhood Alliance, The Little Rock Centennial Park, 1850 W 16thStreet, AR 72202.

Celebrate! Maya Project is an Arkansas-based 501©(3) nonprofit providing educational programming rooted in Dr. Angelou’s words: “When you learn, teach. When you get, give.”  All  contributions will go toward renovation of the future home of Celebrate! Maya Project, for  Maya Scholarships, and Emerging Poetry Awards and are tax deductible..
