First in a Blog Series: Art is the Star at The Rep’s ArtWorks XXVIII

Guest Blog by Lauren James, Rep Communications Manager

While Arkansas Repertory Theatre creates one-of-a-kind, original professional productions, something special shares the spotlight throughout its seasons: local artwork. One evening each year offers patrons the opportunity to mingle with other art enthusiasts and adorn their homes with a variety of extraordinary artwork. It’s ArtWorks and this year, The Rep is excited to host the 28th annual art fundraiser in its lobby on Saturday, May 7, in partnership with Little Rock’s premier social magazine, Inviting Arkansas.

Nearly 90 of the most acclaimed artists in Central Arkansas donate their work for this fun auction that will be complemented by live music, an open bar and light appetizers from some of Little Rock’s yummiest spots including RSVP Catering, Sufficient Grounds, Bravo Italiana Cucina, Southern Gourmasian and Three Fold.

What is ArtWorks?
ArtWorks is an exchange program between visual artists and The Rep. The art displayed in The Rep’s lobbies are available for purchase with proceeds from gallery sales going directly to artists. Proceeds from donated art sold at the annual ArtWorks auction support the general operating fund of the theatre.

History
The ArtWorks dates back to 1988. It was created by then-associate director of The Rep, Cathy Sawyer, as a fundraising project to enhance the theater’s overall mission to provide top-notch live professional theatre in Central Arkansas. The first event was hosted at Main Street Mall as The Rep prepared for its big move to its current location, the Galloway Building at the corner of Main and Sixth streets.
