Ikarus Youth Outreach / Women & Children First Present Break the Silence

Safety, strength, and hope for all victims of family violence.  These words are synonymous with Women and Children First.

On November 17, the Ikarus Youth Outreach / Women & Children First Break the Silence Anti Domestic Violence Forum was held at the Dalton Whetstone Boys and Girls Club. One of the reasons for this event is the lack of forums raising awareness for these issues, educate youth on dating violence, provide the community with resources and information, educate the community on the purpose of Women & Children First. Thank you to the great panelist Dr. Kumar (Psychiatric Area, UAMS), Kayla Smith (Author), Idris Turner (Power 92 Radio Personality), Ms. Angela McGraw (Executive Director Women & Children First), Ms. LaKese Henry (Assistant Director Women & Children First), and the emcee Ms. Laura Monteverdi for sharing their experiences to help educate the community on opioids, suicide, and domestic violence. There was great representation from the community leaders with Arkansas Representative Mr. Frederick Love, Racial Cultural Diversity Commission Member Mr. Jerry Bailey, and Ms. Kristina Carnes, office of Arkansas Attorney General Leslie Rutledge.  Vendor support included  UAMS, Arkansas Children’s Hospital, DHS, Arkansas Minority Health Commission, Arkansas Health and Wellness, and Life Strategies Counseling.

Domestic violence happens everyday and can be seen in social media, television, newspapers, and magazines.  It begs the attention of parents, youth, mentors, pastors, community leaders, organizations, and schools.  Creating future leaders in communities means immersing youth in various cultures, issues, projects, and seminars to broaden their views and strengthen character. We teach them the importance of their communities (schools, businesses, organizations, churches, people within it) so as they grow, their pride never fades but grows larger impacting all they meet.

Future dates and locations will be announced soon as this dynamic panel will continue to inspire, share knowledge, and encourage those to Break the Silence as we move to break the cycle of domestic violence, suicide, and opioids.
