Women in STEAM: Suzanne Peyton

Suzanne Peyton | Garver | Aviation Planning Leader, Professional Engineer, Certified Member AAAE

Beginning Interests… I planned to study architecture in college, but the job market wasn’t good for architects at the time. I chose engineering because it offered more employment opportunities after graduation. When I went to school to be a civil engineer, I really didn’t know much about the opportunities in aviation. Garver is a public sector engineering firm that has business lines serving the aviation, construction, facilities design, federal, power, transportation, and water sectors – so there were a lot of directions available to me. After designing aviation engineering projects for a few years, I began learning about aviation planning and found it to be the right fit for my skills and personality.

Advice… We need more diversity in our technical professions to create more innovative solutions to the complex challenges of the future. There’s a fit in STEAM for any kind of personality and background. Find what works for you and go for it!

Surprising but True… How much creativity and caring is involved in our work. Yes, it’s technical, but it’s for the benefit of others – so there’s great satisfaction in creating something useful and improving communities.

LOVE the Work… I love helping people. As engineers, we use technical knowledge to create infrastructure that improves people’s lives and communities. We make sure people have reliable roads to drive on, safe water, and get to fly across the world. Whatever communities and businesses need to succeed, we have technical skills to design and implement, and we love the challenge of creating solutions.
